Local government in Hampshire

Who does what?

Local government duties in Hampshire are split between the County Council and the local District and Borough councils. If you're not sure which council to talk to about a service, look it up in our A-Z and we will direct you to the right place.

Southampton and Portsmouth have 'unitary authorities' which cover the role of both county and district council in those areas.

Many towns and villages also have Parish or Town councils which provide some local services.

For more about how local government works, see the Directgov guide to local government.
